Coffee Cup

Coffee cup is a sort of general term for any cup you drink coffee from. Since coffee is frequently hot, a coffee cup usually has a single handle to hold onto so that you can drink (after blowing on it a few times) and not burn yourself. A coffee cup or mug can be ceramic, porcelain, or even metal like the old blue speckled type your grandmother might have had, or that you may have used for camping.

Ceramic is a common type of coffee cup because of the advantages it provides. Ceramic helps to keep coffee hot and it’s sturdy. If you fill it with hot coffee, drink, then douse it in cold water, it isn’t going to shatter like some glass possibly could.

You can call just about anything you drink coffee from a coffee cup, really. It might be a teacup, a mug, a fancy thermal cup that you can take along in the car, or your chipped old mug that you picked up on your trip to Hawaii. They can be fancy or plain, expensive or reasonable, big or small. Speaking of small, there are some cups that are created exclusively for coffee. The tiny little cups used for drinking espresso or cappuccino really aren’t meant for anything else. They often look like they came from a little girl’s playset because of their size.

Before you buy yourself a coffee cup, consider your drinking habits. If it takes you a long time to sip your cupful all the way down, you might want to invest in cup that will keep your coffee hot like a metal thermal cup or thermos. You can pick these up at retail stores, or while waiting in line at Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Peets, or whichever coffee joint is in your neighborhood. If you drink at a normal speed and drink a lot, pick up a bigger cup. A smaller cup may help you limit your intake if you’re trying to cut back on caffeine. Of course you can always drink decaf, but that’s a whole other story.
