Kona Coffee comes from the big island of Hawaii, from Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa.

It is one of the most expensive and desired coffees in the world. Its origin, in the Kona districts of Hawaii, has ideal weather conditions for coffee bean growing.

Kona coffee plans grow in February and March, and green berries begin to grow in April. Each tree provides twenty to thirty pounds of its cherry fruit for picking.

From that picking, it takes seven to nine pounds of the cherry to make one pound of roasted coffee. Because of the high amount of cherry needed to make amounts of coffee, Kona coffee has attained the title of one of the most expensive and desired coffees, due to its flavor and its ideal growing conditions from which it originates.

Forbes Magazine said that a type of Kona coffee was ‘best coffee in America’, so the accolades for Kona coffee are plenty. Hawaii is the only state that commercially grows coffee, and that adds to its exclusivity and popularity.

Unlike other processing plants that commercially mass-produce coffee, Kona coffee trees cannot be mechanically harvested, which means each tree must be hand-picked, basically guaranteeing that only the ripest fruits are picked for coffee production, and that can lead to the ‘perfect cup of coffee’.

The region of Kona has about six hundred independent coffee farms, most of which are family-owned. The small amount of suppliers of Kona coffee helps make it so desired and expensive, due to the laborious process that goes into cultivating and producing the coffee.
