Green Tea

Green tea comes from dried leaves of the plant species Camellia sinensis, which not only is in the same genus as the camellia flower, but is where green tea, oolong tea, and black tea all come from.

The distinctions among the three are in how they are processed. Green tea’s leaves and buds, unlike those of its two relatives, are not fermented. Instead, they are steamed and heated to stay green.

Green tea is not just for drinking. Its extract form:

•    comes in capsules, powder, liquid drops, even mints;
•    is often a skin cream or body lotion ingredient, because of its antioxidant properties; and
•    is used in skin patches and gum (similar to anti-nicotine products) as a diet aid.

According to numerous international studies, green tea’s benefits stem from a natural chemical compound known as EGCG, which, because it is rich in antioxidants, helps fight:

•    LDL (“bad”) cholesterol;
•    diabetes, by lowering blood sugar;
•    cancer (particularly of the skin, bladder, or prostate); and
•    even HIV, preliminary studies say.

Moreover, for those who wish to lose weight: A frequently cited 1999 Swiss study notes that the EGCG of green tea extract seems to slightly increase metabolism and burn fat, independent of caffeine.

In 2006, the FDA approved the topical ointment Veregen—derived from green tea leaves, it treats venereal warts.

As for green tea’s “side effects,” they are minimal. Like any tea, it contains caffeine, though significantly less than coffee: 30 to 50 milligrams per 8 brewed ounces, compared to a regular cup of joe’s 95, the USDA says. Green tea also is high in vitamin K, which thins the blood and affects clotting, so don’t consume it with aspirin.

If you’re curious about green tea but take any medication, consult your doctor first.

Arizona Green Tea

Several years ago, one of my dearest friends introduced me to bottles of Arizona Green Tea. While my initial enjoyment of this tea had more to do with its taste than any potential health benefits, I was surprised to learn that this beverage has a decent amount of green tea leaves blended with the liberal sweetening ingredients. Apparently, it is currently easier to find this product nationwide in the form of concentrate. I prefer that option, as I can control the sugar content per serving by adding twice the recommended amount of water. I can accomplish a similar dilution with the reuse of the Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng and Honey Tea Bags. This also means that all of my containers of Arizona Green Tea last a very long time.

Matcha Green Tea

Matcha Green Tea is Japanese green tea leaves in powder form, and is often used when conducting a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. This rite is almost considered to be sacred in solemnity. Unlike the brewing of other teas, when preparing Matcha, boiling water is not used. Thick tea or “koicha” is derived from leaves that have been aged for 30 years or more. Thin tea, better known as “usucha” comes from leaves aged less than 30 years. Matcha Green Tea powder is concentrated; therefore, it can contain more potent characteristics of green tea, such as a high concentration of antioxidants, reservatrol and beta-carotene.

Those anecdotal benefits have passed from generation to generation and are why it is still a staple of the Japanese diet.
